What is a Wellness Recovery Action Plan® (WRAP®) and how do I use it?

WRAP® -Wellness Recovery Action Plan is a structured plan developed by YOU. It is a system that you devise for yourself that helps you work through mental health challenges or life issues. It is adaptable to any situation. Through careful observation, you identify those things you do to help yourself feel better when you are not feeling well, and those things you do to stay well and enjoy your life (Wellness Tools), and then use these wellness tools to develop personal action plans. People all over the world who are working on their recovery and wellness successfully use this planning process.

WRAP is universal ― it is for anyone any time for any of life's challenges.

Upcoming Webinar: Creating A Culture of Wellness: A Path To Eliminating Seclusion and Restraints February 29 2pm - 3:30 pm EST

The Copeland Center is hosting a panel discussion with people who are leading or have led initiatives to reduce and eliminate seclusion and restraints. Panelists will give a national perspective on eliminating seclusion and restraints, talk about trauma informed care in the efforts to eliminate seclusion and restraints, and describe creating cultural changes in hospitals that lead toward a wellness oriented environment including the introduction of the Wellness Recovery Action Plan.

More findings that prove WRAP® works!

Mary Ellen Copeland and six others have a new research paper which has just been published in the Community Mental Health Journal entitled Improving Propensity for Patient Self-Advocacy Through Wellness Recovery Action Planning: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial

   A fundamental aspect of successful illness self- management for people with serious mental illnesses is the ability to advocate for themselves in health and rehabilitation settings.This study reports findings from a controlled trial comparing propensity for patient self-advocacy among those who received a peer-led mental illness self-management intervention called WRAP®, and those who received usual care.

WRAP®  participants were significantly more likely to engage in self-advocacy with their service providers. Higher self-advocacy was associated with greater hopefulness, better environmental quality of life, and fewer psychiatric symptoms among the intervention group.

These findings provide even more support for the positive impact of peer-led self-management programs on mental health recovery.
